Hardwood Flooring

Choosing the hardwood floor that is right for you.
Choosing the right floor can be easier with a little basic knowledge about hardwood flooring. Wood floors are produced in either solid or engineered planks.

Solid :  solid wood produced in 3/4", 7/16" or 5/16" thicknesses. Solid planks must be nailed down and should be installed above grade. Solid planks can generally be refinished several times.

Engineered : constructed by laminating several hardwood plies together. Engineered planks can be glued, stapled or floated and can be used above or below grade.

The species of the wood and the size of the strips is something else to consider. Not only do these choices effect the appearance of your flooring but also the performance of your flooring. Some hardwoods have a higher hardness rating than others, which will allow it to be more resistant to indenting. However, a lot of the exotic hardwoods have a higher UV sensitivity than others, which requires the home owner to pay special attention to the placement of their furniture and area rugs to allow the floor to develop it's color in a more uniformed manner.
